METHODOLOGY

How we work

Learn about our general approach to creating healthcare rankings. Further details about how the ranking was created can be found in the America’s Best Addiction Treatment Centers 2025 methodology.

01 Concept

To identify the nation’s leading addiction treatment centers, the scoring analysis drew from four data sources:

National Online Survey by Statista R: Medical professionals working in addiction treatment centers were invited to recommend and evaluate top facilities within their respective states.

Accreditation Data from SAMHSA: Information on facility accreditations was sourced from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Care Services Data from SAMHSA: Data on the scope of recovery support, educational, and counseling services offered by each facility was also obtained from SAMHSA.

Google Reviews: Online reviews were analyzed as a measure of patient experience with each center.

Only inpatient/residential and long-term addiction treatment centers were included in the ranking. Long-term programs required a minimum residency of 30 days; in select cases, a minimum of 28 days was accepted. Facilities offering only outpatient or short-term addiction treatment services were excluded from consideration.

02 Data collection

From May to June 2025, Newsweek and Statista invited thousands of medical professionals (therapists, counselors, medical doctors) and managers/administrators working in addiction treatment facilities to an online survey. Participants were asked to recommend and subsequently rate notable addiction treatment centers. The professional experience of the participant was taken into account. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed. For each recommended center, participants rated four quality dimensions on a scale from 1 (“Poor”) to 10 (“Excellent”): Quality of care, Quality of follow-up care, Quality of service, and Accommodation & amenities. Each facility received a quality score based on the weighted average of these dimensions.

03 Evaluation

The evaluation of addiction treatment centers utilized a comprehensive scoring model comprising four pillars: Reputation (55%), Accreditation (35%), Care Services (5%), and Google Reviews (5%).

The Reputation Score was primarily informed by recommendations from medical professionals (85%), supplemented by an assessment of specific quality dimensions (15%).

The Accreditation Score was determined using data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) on the accreditations held by each treatment center.

The Care Services Score reflected SAMHSA data regarding the availability of recovery support, educational, and counseling services at each facility.

Google Reviews were included as an additional measure of patient experience.
